THE PROCESS

From Self-assessment to Accreditation

Six steps - and the first is a confidential self-check you can complete before committing to anything.

1. Self-assessment

Score your clinic against the same criteria your auditor will use. Free, confidential, no commitment.

2. Application

When the critical items are in place, submit the application form and your supporting evidence.

3. Document Review

An appointed auditor reviews your evidence remotely and prepares for the on-site visit.

4. On-site Audit

The auditor visits your practice, inspects, reads real records, and records findings.

5. Council Decision

An independent Accreditation Council decides on the file alone and gives written reasons.

6. Ongoing Assurance

Surveillance during the cycle and reassessment on site every second year keep it current.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you ask

Is this a government or regulatory approval?

No. GCLS is a professional and academic body, not a regulator. Accreditation does not replace any licence, and it does not verify your compliance with local law - that remains your responsibility. It attests that your clinic meets a published clinical standard, verified independently on site.

Do we have to be a large clinic?

No, but the standard expects hospital-grade governance - ethics oversight, emergency preparedness, a quality dashboard. Some criteria scale with practice size: in a small clinic one person may hold more than one role, provided each is assigned by name. The free self-assessment will tell you honestly where you stand before you spend anything.

Do we need a consultant to get ready?

No. Every criterion is published with the evidence it requires, and the self-assessment workbook uses the same criteria and scoring your auditor will. GCLS itself will not help you prepare — the same body cannot get you ready and then judge whether you are ready.

Who actually decides whether we pass?

An independent Accreditation Council, a majority of whose members hold no financial interest in GCLS, deciding on the assessment file alone without having met you. Your auditor gathers evidence and records findings but makes no recommendation and cannot tell you the outcome.

What does it cost?

CHF 9,900 for the initial audit, covering your first two years. After that, a remote surveillance review and an on-site reassessment every second year. The fee is the same whether you are accredited or not - you pay for the assessment, not the result.
